    Quran 29:65

“If they happen to be aboard a ship ˹caught in a storm˺, they cry out to Allah ˹alone˺ in sincere devotion. But as soon as He delivers them ˹safely˺ to shore, they associate ˹others with Him once again˺.”

I think it should be words added in the translation that do not translate directly from the Arabic but add to the context of the Arabic words. This notation seems specific to this translation though.

Every translation is also an interpretation. This is one of the reasons why there is a lot of emphasis on preserving the Quran in Arabic and learning the classical Arabic to understand it.

Also happens when I’m having a really horrible shit. If you’ve never been reduced to praying to god at the toilet, be thankful.

Had major stomach pains as a kiddo, with hourly long toilet visits. Promised God I’m gonna believe in him if they stop out of desperation, like, what are the chances but anything that can help…

It helped tho. Shit that kept me on edge for months passed within two weeks.

So, yeah, I am a believer to this day. But I can bet most christians won’t like my story of “shat so hard God had to save me” xD

I spent 12 hours writhing on the ER floor with a kidney stone. I literally wanted to die, if given the option and a button to press that would have snuffed out life, I would have asked for a turbo setting on the button.

Still never prayed. Raised christian, prayed my entire childhood for things I desperately wanted like my parents to stop fighting and to have friends and be allowed to go to school and nothing ever came from it. I just stopped going to “him” for help after a while and realized finally nobody is coming, there is no higher power. We just have ourselves and our moments here to make the best of. One chance is all we have to make a good life for ourselves and others, and I believe FIRMLY if more people knew this we would have a better world.

Christianity also says we have one shot - then we either eat shit in hell if we effed up or find oyrselves in haven…whatever it means.

But back to the topic - most folk know this, but this raises one bad idea - if it’s only as good as you make it, why care for others? Make them stepping stones for your benefit.

Aaaand thus we end in this hellhole.

Yeah I just watched some prominent Christian leader try to explain to people why they won’t be sad if their family members or children go to hell when they go to heaven and it was about the most paradoxical, delusional, miserable performance to explain something that’s obvious bullshit that I’ve seen in years, and I’ve been around a few.

It’s an exercise in delusion, that’s my point. If you can delude yourself about one part of a belief system, you can do whatever gymnastics you want to get your perfect outcome where you never have to worry about the world you leave behind. It’s far, far more dangerous and has caused far, far more suffering on this planet than any other belief or thinking system.

This reminds me of a couplet in a Greg Freeman song: “Clenched fists find God in rough landings, and tonight it’s gonna snow.”
