That the liberal gives the gun to the fascist is ironic in that it subverts the usual formula of someone being shot twice, which is itself based in irony, as one would originally expect two people to be shot. The fact that it’s an accurate metaphor for actual politics is necessary; if it weren’t we’d all think the joke doesn’t make sense.
