Oh my sweet summer child. You do know that they will attempt to control something even if they do not understand it? I have lived long enough with enough knowledge to know that Politicians do not understand technology but will attempt to control it if they perceive it to be an issue, it’s not even a UK thing. “A series of tubes” was one of the first memes I remember.

Like various governments and politicians have advocated for and sometimes even mandated stupid shit on the regular. They don’t care if they don’t understand, they wanna be seen to be doing something by people who also don’t understand, even if they do understand. The USA nearly banned VCRs in a supreme court case. Here’s Baroness Fox during a debate on the Online Safety Act announcing that she just learnt about VPNs. A lot the law on the internet is based around television and was written in the days before Satellite TV.

Every time you hear about a “PC/woke gone mad” story about some org putting forward an idea to “help” a group, know for a start that 99% of the time it was introduced by a politician who doesn’t belong to said group but speaks on their behalf. A lot of politicians, CEOs and designers will make decisions, stupid decisions, about things they don’t fully understand and not consult anyone who does.
