I find that deleting videos from my watch history in youtube does more for recommendations then brute forcing other videos.

Agreed. Check out Grayjay: https://grayjay.app/ https://gitlab.futo.org/videostreaming/grayjay

It’s a client for following creators across platforms while the user retains control. YouTube is one of the platforms Grayjay can access but you don’t have to let YouTube play adverts, track you, etc. It lets users turn the screen off and keep playing audio, bypass intros or sponsored ads, download whole videos, and other quality of life features.

You can also avoid YouTube entirely and only stream from PeerTube, NewPipe, SoundCloud, etc. You just tap the plugins you want and it respects your choices.

It’s still under active development during an ongoing arms race with YouTube but I’ve been using it for over a year and have only encountered two bugs that kept me from using it. It’s been a refreshing experience overall and I find myself watching more of the stuff I care about, more meaningfully supporting the artists I care about, and disallowing Google to abuse those interactions.

I’m not affiliated with them in any way. Just a happy convert.

Lately I’ve been watching Practical Engineering where the host gives some basic explanations about the engineering considerations for designing various infrastructure projects like dams or railroads. I’ve also seen some interesting videos from Wendover Productions about airline operations like how airlines design their route networks for a competitive advantage or how they assign planes to routes.

Huygens Optics, some old Dutch (I think) guy who shows how to make optics (like, for telescopes and stuff) and talks about physics stuff. And he sometimes randomly throws in silly (and musically competent) songs and dancing videos. Doesn’t do any sponsor stuff at all, just a cool, chill channel talking about physics and grinding glass and such.

I’m not even remotely in that field, I’m just some linux idiot who likes learning random stuff. And his videos are so damn good, technically very deep but not at all inaccessible, somehow

Each show is unique, from what I see in the comments. I feel like he’s not doing the traditional ‘write a set’ thing, but he works backwards from an idea (“America feels like a Dollar General nowadays”, for example) and has the ability to conjure an hour of almost shaggy-dog-story material on the spot leading you to that endpoint.

      Rare talent.

Any Austin is pretty great, he talks about videogames but more like checking the unemployment levels in skyrim or following powerlines in GTA to see if the infrastructure makes sense

    VideoGameDunkey is a certified classic

MiniMinuteMan does some cool paleontology videos, as well as some good conspiracy debunking

Explosions&Fire is a chaotic Australian chemistry channel (along with the sister channel Extractions&Ire).

Rybonator makes custom dice from resin and is a great choice for DnD fans and dice goblins

Natural Habitat Shorts is a hilarious animation channel that focuses on real animal facts

DCA is amazing! I don’t quite understand why I watch every single one of his videos, but I do
