The French are unapologetically chauvinist and proud about their culture. They often make jokes about the lack of yank culture. They have been very loud about taxing US companies, they are one of the few European countries that try to have their own military equipment production, they spend inordinate amount of money removing US tech from their government and are loud and proud of their “la French tech”.
Charles de Gaulle was pro-Europe and anti-USA long before Macron was even born. The very reason there are jokes about French losing wars is because of US propaganda - it flat out false. France has had a very successful military (to the horror of those who lost against them). They are actually one of the most successful militaries in the world. Yankees have regularly lost against the French in war games.
