It’s not my fault, but it is definitely my problem if I’m in a position to help people and decide not to. Make no mistake, I raise holy hell while I’m doing it, but the lack of workers doesn’t lessen the amount of work that needs to get done. Maybe it’s just naivete, but I’m idealistic enough to believe that helping students is the most important thing I can do, so I only say yes to things that are directly helping students, faculty, and staff (admin and their busy work can fuck right off with their bloated salaries and support staff)

This is definitely a difference between people that believe the work they do is important and people just punching a clock.

I teach at a community college (salaried) and my partner works as staff in the same school (hourly). She works her ass off, but when she gets to the end of the day, she is done and leaves work at the office, so attending meetings is no big deal to her. Meanwhile, I’ve gotten involved enough in peripheral committee work that I regularly stay up working until 1AM because there are literally not enough hours in the day to get done what needs to get done. I could try to leave work at work, but I’d be hanging students and fellow instructors out to dry, so that’s not always an option.

On the other hand, if you’re immortal and you can’t manage to build a fair bit of wealth, what are you even doing with your time?

Truly a brand new sentence

1. Pulp Fiction: Perfection
2. Reservoir Dogs: he did so much with so little, and I love the idea of a heist movie that doesn’t show the heist
3. Inglorious Basterds: Beautifully cast, and Tarantino’s first collaboration with Christopher Waltz is just amazing. Plus that scene in the bar keeps you on edge for an unimaginably long time before letting the shit hit the fan.
4. Kill Bill (1+2): just an amazing soundtrack and he perfectly captures the essence of both samurai films and revenge films.
5. Django Unchained: somehow perfectly fuses blaxploitation and westerns. Plus, more Christopher Waltz
6. Jackie Brown: the least “Tarantino” of the Tarantino films, but still a pretty good flick.
7. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood: pretty good and I love when Tarantino rewrites history, but I don’t generally like Hollywood movies about Hollywood as they usually feel a little too much like a circle-jerk.
8. Death Proof: I like it for what it is, but it’s not really a feature-length Tarantino movie, so it doesn’t really scratch the itch.
9. Hateful Eight: I grew up on Westerns and love Tarantino, so I really wanted to love this one, but it wasn’t really very good. The premise of closed-room Western is fascinating and it was almost great, but the last third/quarter was a huge letdown

“Stop Being Desperate” has a real “Let them eat cake” feel, especially coming from her.

Good to know! I took years of Spanish classes and my kids are in a Spanish immersion school in California, but I’ve only ever heard lagarto for smaller lizards and cocodrilo for anything resembling crocodilians

Fun fact about the etymology of “alligator:” When the Spanish first landed in what is now Florida, they found alligators and simply called them “el lagarto,” which literally translates to “the lizard.” While there were many reptiles in the swamps and bayous, only one was enough of a problem to be called “THE lizard,” and after several mistranslations being borrowed into other languages, “el lagarto” morphed into “alligator”

Dropbox, Spotify, and a VPN are worth it: fight me.

Sure, Spotify doesn’t pay artists enough and I miss having Neil Young available for streaming, but what are the other options that work well in the car? I’m not going to go back to using discs or plugging in MP3 players to the aux port, and I don’t mind paying the bands directly for merch/albums if I’m really a fan. Considering I mostly listen to vinyl at home, I’m not paying Spotify for music; I’m paying Spotify for the convenience of being able to not listen to terrestrial radio and to be able to listen to what I like in the car or at work without the need for Youtube.

And my personal Dropbox account that I also use for work is well worth 15$/mo for 2TB of storage. It’s saved me so much grief to be able to back up phone photos, access my work files from any computer, keep records of my personal documents, etc., and the software is both more cost effective and better designed than Google Drive or OneDrive. PDF’s of my RPG books/characters/maps? Dropbox. Grocery list text file? Dropbox. Place to stash tabs/sheet music that is easily kept organized without the need for a physical copy? Dropbox. Phone number of that parent who saw my partner’s car get tagged in the parking lot at school? Wait, I think I have her phone number in an spreadsheet from when I coached her daughter in tee-ball…gimme a sec…yep, it’s in my Dropbox. In a side note, Dropbox may have turned me into a digital hoarder.

But the rest of this subscription-based garbage can get bent.
