I hear this all the time. What does friendly mean in this context? When you’re meeting complete strangers for a very brief time (like in an elevator or a coffee shop) do you want them to be close and intimate like a friend? I would think the best you can and should be is polite.

Implementing and enforcing a rule like that would punish the constituents of the riding. If the principle is that an MP should first and foremost do what’s best for his or her riding, then joining a party is far superior to sitting as an independent. It gives them a seat in caucus where decisions are made, input into policy positions, a chance to chair committees and potential cabinet or secretary roles. A party MP can walk into ministers offices and lobby internally for local projects. Independents don’t get these benefits. This ignores all the other benefits like campaign funding, etc. For a riding as influential as Markham/Unionville this is a substantial gain for the Liberals and they will no doubt be willing to support and listen to the constituents, and treat them quite favourably.

The Canadian body politic should have learned and should recognize that we vote for MPs, not specifically for parties. The parties are political associations, not constitutional actors. If you want the best results for your riding, you probably don’t want an independent. Sitting with a party maximizes impact, sitting as an independent maximizes moral autonomy.

We shouldn’t dismiss or ignore the fact that floor crossing is an essential element of a healthy parliamentary democracy, as much as it’s maligned as often as it is praised. It’s based on the principle that MPs represent constituents, not just parties, that they have a free mandate vs imperative mandate (eg conscience votes, dissent, etc.) and that responsible government is based on confidence not party purity.

We may not live up to the ideals of the system, but we should at least try.

I’ve seen where the modern right wing takes us. It’s orange, it’s bloviating, it’s anti-intellectual, it’s corrupt to the core. Yes torrent and file-sharing in most cases violates copyright and is therefore illegal.

That fact won’t stop people, especially teens, from doing it. But it is a fact.

As with most things involving kids, open, healthy and honest communication is the best way. If you don’t have that then no constraints will really contain them, they will find a way around them, they will sneak around behind your back, and you will lose their trust.

In today’s western democracies leader cults and charismatic authoritarianism tends to cluster on the right, not the left, despite what the “both sides!” people want to believe.

Donald Trump is the obvious endpoint of pseudopopulist anti-intellectual conservatism. Thankfully the US got there first, so we can all see where the conservatives around the world are headed.

I believe the majority of reasonable Canadians want to reach a just and fair reconciliation that rights the wrongs of the past. Any reconciliation that we expect to be done in mutual goodwill must consider the other innocent parties as well.

If private land is affected, then the land owners releasing title need to be fairly compensated by the government. That is the true and total cost of reconciliation.

Many people in this country are sympathetic to righting the wrongs of the past, but they are not going to destroy their own lives to do it. Let’s not forget that ancestry and history do not change the fact that people born in this country, whether indigenous or not, have known nothing other than this country, it is their home no less and no more than anyone else born here, and they have nowhere else to go.

There also needs to be a very transparent and clear timeline and total cost for reconciliation with a clear endpoint milestone.

Fighting against these things will simply create an expanding group of malcontents that will eventually have enough political power to push back in highly unproductive ways.

The unusual twist on this situation is that it appears that the people who may have any real sway in pressuring the government to understand the above seem to be the indigenous groups themselves.

Well we don’t have a respectable conservative party in this country that could push back, especially since this is exactly what they would have proposed.
