  • The big scam going on right now is washers. They all have aluminum basket supports that hold the drum. The drums are stainless steel in pricier models, but the support is raw aluminum. Detergents have high pH and heat causes the aluminum to break down and corrode at a set rate designed by the manufacturers to just exceed the warranty. They can be replaced, but the parts are rarely in stock and the washers ware purposely designed to require almost complete dissassembly over many hours to do the swap, making repair cost ineffective.

    Nest thermostats: that thing you bought will not work after October because Google will brick it. No local API options offered.

    Phones used to have removable backing to swap a battery or access to repair, now they are glued shut.
