other platforms are bringing in age verification.
Will be interesting to see how this pans out for lemmy.
You’re right there will be a movement away from the larger platforms. I don’t think it will be a movement to lemmy though.

You may not agree with what the military does, but you have to respect them for that reason alone, above all else.
You seem to have strange ideas of what I, or others, will respect people for doing?
I would have incredible respect for anyone refusing an order because they feel that it is illegal.

You seem to have misunderstood me.

Yeah but surely… surely not.

Maybe the blocked doors are just window shutters ? who knows.
Those masks sure are creepy.
Edit:
Actually from the dropbox folder that @pelespirit@sh.itjust.works shared there’s this photo:
The pitch of the roof and the position of the doors makes it look like the outside of the room with the night stands in-front of the doors. It looks like they could be used as a kind of pavillion during outdoor events, like a place to serve snacks and drinks.
I’ll leave you to draw your own conclusions about the steel bars blocking those doors from the outside. You can see them horizontally across the two doors on the left, and there’s one propped against the wall next to the door on the right.
Honestly, I think if they had rooms in which to detain people against their will it wouldn’t be like this, but IDK.

Sorry Americans, I usually try not to point out the absurdity of your politics just because I don’t want to be an ass but having a president name some kind of investment account for kids after himself is some real next level stuff.
Sure ok everyone here is fine but a large portion of Americans think that this is entirely appropriate.

Maybe everyone already knows this but you can generally see better in your peripheral vision in low light.
Almost all of your color vision / cones are concentrated in a tiny central area of your retina.
The grey scale / rods are dispersed around that.
In some ways I think night vision is a kind of skill that some people might be better at than others, even if the mechanics of their eyes aren’t special.

Yeah me too. I think this is called “coil hum”. I notice it with things like usb-c thunderbolt ports. Often you can swap a cable or something and it’s resolved.

I’ve been trying to get zulip working.
Sounds like it addresses your requirements.
Seems to be a real bitch to self host - I’ve been doing this a while but the compose yaml is pretty arcane with hundreds of environment variables.
I didn’t “give up” exactly but it’s been on the back burner for a month or so now.

I don’t really have this conversation with people.
This stuff is important to me, it’s not really accessible to people without lots of time and the same interest.

Yeah, I do think 20 is too young.
why wait if you know what you want?
This is a fair question but honestly there’s so many good reasons to wait.
The obvious answer is… if it’s really what you want then what’s the hurry ? I mean it’s great that you’ve found your life partner and whatever and that your future seems so certain, but why complicate things with marriage? I’m honestly kinda wondering. Is it the commitment that’s important to you? Are you waiting to have sex? Do you actually want to get pregnant?
If it’s the commitment that you want, then oh my god marriage is a terrible idea.
If it’s sex, then… well… there’s probably not much I can say that will change your mind. Still a terrible idea.
If it’s kids then if your wife to be gets pregnant before commencing a career you’re king of condemning her to a life time of minimum wage jobs. You might be planning for a trad-wife kind of situation but … plans change. It’s a bit like planning for a career as a rock star - it’s great to follow your dreams but your partner needs a plan B.
If none of the above apply then there doesn’t seem to be any good reason to get married. Spend 5 years living with your respective parents and save up for a deposit on a house or something.

On one hand I agree that today, the easiest solution is freetube or similar.
However, this problem seems to become “unsolved” every other Wednesday.

On one hand, I imagine the administration is treating these documents with the utmost care.
On the other hand, it sounds like thousands of people have been involved in handling them.
There are probably dozens of people with their own copies, ready for use as blackmail.

There’s probably some commentary, but there’s no list of criminal charges.

I do feel like these idiots should be thrown under the bus, and punished to the full extent of the law. I really do hope they’re held accountable for their wanton destruction.
That said, I can imagine some college graduates going along with something like this simply because they don’t have the life experience to really understand the legal, political, and social ramifications of what they’re doing.
This seems obvious to me. By definition, an ecosystem includes all inputs.
That’s true, but it doesn’t respond to the point I was making.
The comment I replied to was comparing an entire system to a single component within a system.
I don’t think that’s a fair comparison.
An ecosystem contains many species at equilibrium, but the ecosystem itself consumes all available resources.
Similarly, companies within a capitalist system maintain a kind of equilibrium, but the system itself will consume all available resources.
network effect. There’s fewer people here so there’s fewer people here.
That said, I like it just how it is and would caution anyone against wishing for more users.
Don’t focus on getting more users. Focus on making the content here the best it can be.
It’s inevitable that the quality of the experience here will change with more users. Whether it’s a net positive or negative remains to be seen.
To be sure, these are the “good old days” of lemmy.
