Full airgap between the system and the rest of the world. Then introduce features to update that airgapped system from one way data transfers (like sneakernetting a hard drive/USB/disk/tape). Then introduce additional features to get that data from a network but cached local. Then introduce networked features, and only if connecting to another independent system is absolutely needed.
Basically stick what has worked in tech and avoid developing SaaS. At least if you are making something for users and not shareholders.
fruitycoder@sh.itjust.worksto Linux@programming.dev•Smallest modem I can put into bridge mode and feed into a router?3·8 days agoUnfortunately modems have the issue that they are made to be provisioned, configured, and owned by the ISP. At least that’s how most DOCSIS setups I’ve seen work.
The only hope I’m seeing (I’m also wanting to do this) is running my own CMTS. I found a service (https://github.com/cablelabs/os-provisioning is the only opensource tool I’ve seen before) but I am still trying to figure out a reasonable cost way to connect that server to the actual network (so far bladerf sdr is ny best hair brained idea, which is really only cost effective because I want to play with 5g too). The last bit of luck I have is that my ISP isn’t actually doing firmware updates on my modems, so if I connected them to my Internet lab network, provisioned my custom OS and firmware, and then connected it back to the ISP I can get their DOCSIS config. In theory at least 😅
Netgear has modems that have their OS and firmware in nice packages with build instructions at least. ARIS’s older modem code is out there too but a pain compared to get.
You technically could use that same sdr as the modem on your ISPs network BUT because it’s actually RF the FCC regulates it (for good reason I guess lol).
fruitycoder@sh.itjust.worksto Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL about the largest labor uprising in history: The Battle of Blair Mountain, when the US military was deployed against 10,000 WV coal minersEnglish1·12 days agoYou’ll civilize them yet ol chap. Filthy savages mining coal like theyre family and community expected them too. Why don’t they just drop all of that nasty business and take up more savory professions already? Ask them why? Ha those fools can’t have any meaningful reasons, surely you and I know what is best for them. /S
I mean honestly though, I’m pro clean energy. I’m pro shutting down the coal industry. But have you actually heard anyone from there talk about what they want or what theyre concerns are?

Come in destroy the primary way of living and then offer charity with strings attached to help civilize or remove the natives.
fruitycoder@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are you genuinely excited about?8·18 days agoFood forest concept has been really cool to get into
I went from prefering perneals, to permaculture, to full on food forest goals. I love it. Got a few buckets of apples this year and my first gallon of elderberry juice. Was able to pick some nice mulberries and have some tomatios on the way.
All of which I just pruned this year. Which is A TON less work then tilling, planting, weeding, and watering.
Got a fig tree on the way, mint taking over a good patch. Still figuring out what guilds of plant really work on my hugalculture walls where I live.
Honestly I love foraging my own yard vs feeling like it was a chore I had to keep up on.
Same tbh. Ive done more cooking now then ever because i can just ask for substitues then and there. I will say, against slop, i have noticed the old recipe site style but with that AI slop verbosity out there. I find that worse then what it was.
