Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•"What is the oldest country in the world that still exists?" is a Ship of Theseus problem.
61·17 days agoSame with indigenous people on turtle island (north america).
I’d argue that it doesnt really count since the concept of ‘country’ though is more colonial in its origins so realistically, a ‘country’ wouldn’t exist until after colonization in these areas.
Nations might’ve existed with different groups/tribes/villages sharing a culture, but the concepts of clear-cut borders, strict land ownership, and nationalism (which to me are a requirement for the concept of a “country”) are significantly different in many indigenous cultures as compared to colonial states. Maybe with the exception of some Latin American empires? Though I don’t know enough about those empires to be confident in that.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How to separate self-worth from Achievements and External Validation?
2·19 days agoI feel you 100%, I have the same voice. If you want to watch something truly depressing but extremely relatable, the episode called “stupid piece of shit” from bojack horseman covers the topic in a much more real way than any cartoon has the right to do so.
We can get through it though, the voice is a liar.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How to separate self-worth from Achievements and External Validation?
2·19 days agoI don’t… Hahaha this is one of the things I most often speak to my counsellor about though and I’m working hard on it.
My issue is more around productivity (achievements), so what I work on is doing things for the sake of doing them, not for the final product, i.e. doing art for the process or even playing a game just to play and not for literal achievements. Learning to just enjoy things for the process or just doing ‘nothing’. They suggested I could just come home and sit and watch my cats and… Just do nothing. I’m still working on that one.
We haven’t gotten that far into external validation, but I think learning to have compassion/love for yourself helps with that.
Its a great initiative but from the looks of it, the creators are taking a break. I wonder if there’s any other organizations (not shitty websites that rip designs) that are selling something similar towards a good cause.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Did it really used to be common for guys to go to a bar every night like in Cheers or The Simpsons?
7·19 days agoI had the same experience and did feel badly for them as well. For a lot of them (especially middle aged men in my experience), they just seemed very lonely. I miss a lot of those regulars, they were generally good people.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•The people who protest against the Palestinian Genocide would be the same people who protested against the Holocaust.
102·19 days agoI’ve been to a pro-pal protests few around different cities and have never met any real anti-Semite on the side of the protest. I have, however, met a couple of counter protesters that hold the Israeli flag yet proudly call themselves white supremacists.
I think it’s just saying that it’s dumb to call other people’s rallies pointless if you yourself have rallies as well. Like either you believe rallies accomplish something or you don’t, but you don’t get to say that some rallies work and others don’t, because regardless of the cause, all rallies have the same purpose (awareness and solidarity for a specific cause, generally).

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there an anti- sleep-paralysis device?
4·24 days agoI used to get sleep paralysis all the time. For me it was because I was sleeping on my back which (according to some shit I read online a very long time ago) makes sleep paralysis more likely to occur. Haven’t had any issues since I started forcing myself to sleep on my side only.

Def not in the show. Doubt the person who made the meme has ever even seen the show tbh
