Margaret McCuaig-Johnston, board director at the China Strategic Risk Institute and former senior Canadian government official, discusses Prime Minister Carney’s upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the APEC Summit. She examines the risks of Canada pursuing closer trade ties with China, while warning that such moves could undermine Canada and invite Chinese leverage over Canadian policy on Taiwan, Uyghur human rights, and critical infrastructure.
She also addresses the striking shift in Canadian public opinion, with more Canadians now viewing the U.S. as an enemy than China, and critiques the lack of progress on addressing Chinese foreign interference in Canada.
Yes.
It’s a tough balancing act but yes, we have been selling our morals for economic benefit for years. I don’t know how many people pay attention to this though and those that do I don’t think consider the alternatives. They whine about it but have no appetite for the consequences of not capitulating. It’s really been brought to the forefront with the current U.S. conflict. You’ve got idiots like Doug Ford (I mean that whole heartedly) loving to talk a tough game (he wants to be prime minister) but having no clue what he would do if we really stood up for our beliefs. A good example was his ill considered attempt to stop exporting electricity to the U.S., which he had to immediately back off from. Then you get the recent TV commercial problem in which I have no doubt Carney thought he could use his useful idiot to stir the pot. For someone with no “experience” in politics it didn’t take him long to play the old tired games. I don’t want to just pick on Doug Ford though. This country is chock full of morons.
Yes just like we sold it to the USA.
