Cory Doctorow’s new book is an insightful diagnosis of how Big Tech is making every app and website worse—even if his solutions leave something to be desired.
But considering the size of the shit-heap we’re facing, I can’t help but wish it provided a bigger shovel.
Sometimes I think we should restart it “from the scratch” - picking up the experiences and elements of the new internet, and making a new one out of it. I know it’s an idiocy (nirvana fallacy) but… I can’t help it.
I wonder if that “new internet” would be able to preserve the privacy and anonymity of its users, while still kicking out disruptive groups - advertisers, hate groups, “we’ll DDoS you to train our model”, etc.

The old Internet was just a fad until advertisers realized they could make a buck.
Any new Internet would need to also make a buck, or more, to gain any real traction.
I wouldn’t say it was a fad, it was more like niche. Something you won’t make money out of, but with a stable base of people using it.
And IMO it’s fine if the “new internet” doesn’t get as much traction as the current one; doubly so if both can share the same physical infrastructure.
I’ve been hoping for this. A new underground net. How can we make it?
If I knew it, I’d be making it, instead of ranting “ideas guy” tier dreams in Lemmy.
