I love Daft Punk so much. I hate that I never got a chance to see them live. I have the album Alive 2007 on repeat right now. (I say earlier stuff in the title because I didn’t care for the album Random Access Memories.)
Who else would you recommend I listen to? Especially if they’re still producing music. I love their loopy, sampled sound. Any other bands do something similar? Identical isn’t necessary, adjacent is fine.
Nightcall by kavinsky isn’t exactly what OP is looking for imo but absolutely worth a listen anyway
This.
The whole edbanger crew is worth a look
Mine was in the mid2000s. “Danger” released “11h30” which is an absolute banger that, at the time, nothing came close to sounding like it. Would recommend!
100% go see Air on tour right now. The Moon Safari tour might be the closest thing to peak Daft Punk shows but obviously the chill side of it. Incredible vibes at these shows with amazing stage production.
Les Digitales Rhymes - Röyksopp is still active - Mirwais Ahmadzaï production - Basement Jaxx - The Avalanches (crazy amount of samples) - Danger - Red snapper (jazzy) - Dead mau5 ( not for me but the certainly took some the daft punk blueprint)
Of course Justice, Underworld, DJ Shadow, Fatboy slim, chemical brothers, Orbital, LCD Soundsystem
Moon Safari is a masterpiece.
I wish Air was coming to a city near me. Tragic.
According to Mr Collins they are coming in the air tonight!
What genre are all these artist? I thought EDW but searching for EDM playlists does not give me anything similar to these artists.
They are very different genres. But most likely Daft Punk have danceable music that can be traced back to Chicago house. After disco people stared incorporating synth /electro sound into dance music into the 80s. Chicago house DJ Paul Johnson is the first name mentioned in the Daft Punk song “Teachers”. During the 90’s French house became very big. Searching 90’s or 2000’s French house will get groups close to Daft Punk.
M-83
They’re even French
Justice is up there for me. Haven’t disliked a single one of their albums yet.
This is the answer I would choose too for something that sounds most like Daft Punk
They are also touring this year
I saw them last year and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever been too. The lighting they had was incredible
You mean who is the next genre defining band combining modern electonica and classic Disco funk into bona-fide club bangers?
Dunno… lemme know when you figure it out tho
There’s a whole genre of Future Funk out there.
Macross 82-99, Saint Pepsi, Conscious Thoughts, AnTgry, Yung Bae, id chief, Castle Carousel, to a lesser extent Flamingosis…
Isn’t Saint Pepsi vaporwave? I remember Enjoy Yourself or whatever that song was called, with Mac Tonight as the music video.
Also, nu-disco is also a thing. Not sure if disco funk is more disco or more funk, as I’m not very familiar with the intricasies of disco
I was a fan of Funky Panda on YouTube a few years back (~2019), mostly for electro swing, but they also uploaded future funk and nu-disco. Not anymore, though. Funky Way FM as an online radio appears to have come back, though
Edit: here be the Funky Way: https://funkyway.net/
Edit 2: there’s also an album credited to Kyo-2, Macintosh Plus, Saint Pepsi and Saint Germain on Spotify and the first song is entitled “VAPORWAVE THEME SONG.” Not sure if it is legit, as I’m not familiar enough with vaporwave. I recognise two names, though
I don’t believe there is a “next daft punk” as of yet but I would consider the following artists relatively daft punk adjacent. Certainly worth checking out.
Flume
What So Not
Gesaffelstein
RL Grime
Rustie
Jungle
Chet Faker
Die Antwoord
Be aware of Die Antwoord controversies and them being horrible people.
Yeah, shame about that, I kinda liked their music.
Justice, no contest. Watch the full ‘Iris - A space opera’ live concert on YouTube and you’ll understand why.
Breakbot
I’ve gotten really into Lemaitre, they’re a Norwegian electronic duo thas kind of in between Avicii and Daft Punk, as far as sound goes. To me at least, they’re incredible. Their song Reflection came on my playlist one day and… Man, you ever hear a song and just immediately know you’re going to listen to it on repeat for the next week? Then I checked out more of their songs and immediately listened to those on repeat as well.
I never hear anyone talking about them though. It’s crazy to me they’re not more popular. Their music just seems to push a button in my brain.
Excellent suggestion, both for their quality and similarity to daft punk. You’re right, I almost never hear people talk about them!
Not really the same but Chromeo.
Chromeo is so fucking funky and danceable.
Also just some random Future Funk suggestions…
Macross 82-99, Saint Pepsi, Conscious Thoughts, AnTgry, Yung Bae, id chief, Castle Carousel, to a lesser extent Flamingosis…
I will never not upvote some Chromeo.
Not sure I’d phrase it that way but you’d probably like:
Wax Tailor
Ratatat
Justice
Flying Lotus
Paza Rahm
Two Fingers
Claude VonStroke
Xploding PlastiX
Edit:
I’ll throw in Caravan Palace and Parov Stellar if you like electroswing
Man, I haven’t listened to Ratatat in yeaaars. Thanks for the memory!
So sad Ratatat is gone. Nothing since 2015. Just one more way the world went downhill since then.
I don’t know about the next Daft Punk, but i share your opinion of earlier vs later and have been digging Framewerk’s stuff lately. Give it a whirl: https://framewerk.bandcamp.com/album/the-anthemic-collection-limited-release
I like The Midnight and Gunship
Rumor is, any time two Frenchmen are in a room with a keyboard, there is a small chance that the next electronic duo will form from the interaction.
Until then, it’s probably Justice and Ratatat. Check out Marc Rebillet, too. The rare “one-man electronic duo.”
Oh man, Ratatat. My (now) wife put Ratatat on the mix CD she made for me after our first date 15 years ago.
Marc Rebillet
The legend. I mean he’s fun for a while but after that while you start to see patterns and it kind of got old for me.
True, I don’t listen to him for several days in a row like I do with Justice or Daft Punk. But I love him in bite-sized pieces, and tracks like Your New Morning Alarm make me smile every time.
I saw him at Bonnaroo a couple years ago and everyone in the crowd was having such a good time. At one point, he’s running around on stage in his bathrobe (of course), and his robe got snagged on something. So he just took it off, and was running around in his underwear yelling, “SOMEONE GET ME A ROBE! SOMEONE GET ME A GOD DAMN ROBE!” Then he made a song out of it.
My friends who enjoy Daft Punk all love RAM and I, like you, really didn’t dig it. There’s a good song or two but the rest really don’t jive with me.
