Not really. It’s up to the software, soundcard, and/or recording.

Stereo headphones are surround. The reason laptop speakers are not is because they are in front of you. Headphones are one for each ear, separate.

Our brain is very sensitive to phase difference between sound in either ear. That is how we can tell sound direction. It’s like triangulation, except the third variable is the shape of our ears (is it comming from the front or the back, see HRTF again).

There is no such thing as surround headphones. There can not even be such a thing. All headphones are surround. It’s either sound card drivers, software in the chain, the recording itself, or just marketing. Get “normal” headphones and check out some directional audio videos on youtube.

Openal is an audio library used by some older games and they patched HRTF into it to make it sound even more surround.

Decent headphones that are comfortable are better then even more expensive full room setups, although just for one person.

Edit: Funny enough the last time I explained this was to an audio engineer. Took him a bit, but he got it when I used sharks ears as an example.

  • The current limitations of LLMs are built in how they fundementaly work. We would need something completely new. That is a fact.

Honestly the thought of med students using them to pass exams scares me.

Sure, use them to replace CEOs of some unimportant companies like facebook. But they are not for jobs where other peoples lives are at stake. They inherently halucinate (like many CEOs). It is built in in how they work.

  • It’s called RAG, and it’s the only “right” way to get any accurate information out of an LLM. And even it is not perfect. Not by far.

You can use it without an LLM. It’s basically keyword search. You still have to know what you are asking, so you have to study. Study without an imprecise LLM that can feed you false information that sounds plausible.

There are other problems with current LLMs that make them problematic. Sure you will catch onto those problems if you use them, and you still have to know more about the topic then them.

They are a fun toy and ok for low-stakes knowledge (ex cooking recipies). But as a tool in serious work they are a rubber ducky at best.

PS What the guy couple comments above said about sources, that’s probably about web search. Even when an LLM reads the sources it can missinterpet them easily. Like how apple removed their summaries because they were often just wrong.

You know Linus acts like an ass, but Balmer is an ass, and Jobs was a horrible person?

And google is amoral in general.

I’d rather side with the rude for a reason crowd, then the polite to take advantage of you crowd.

That said I use linux for a long time now, and only recently would I recommend it to others. And even that not always.

  • “Man up” isn’t always about bottling your feeling like the US internet says. More often it’s “stop complaining and just do it”. And someone has to do “it”. And it often leads to growth.

    The internet often distorts things.

As for the topic, I am a feminist. The first and second wave feminism, that is. The equality ones. Not the pink haired screaming “all men are evil and should pay” third wave. Everybody screaming “patriarchy” while sitting on their bed, not even looking further then that. Looking at everything black and white.

Actually, I’m kinder to women then men…
