I think your IT setup is broken, in addition to AI being AI. The regular online services work as intended on a working internet browser. For me the text fields and scrolling work as on any other internet page and so do file uploads (up to a certain size).

Other than that, LLMs are kind of autocomplete on steroids (that’s not the entire story), but they’re supposed to pick up on your tone. If you write very casually, or input garbled sentences, it’s going to pick up on that. This is to be expected.

But yeah, seems like you sent some honest feedback. I also occasionally try coding with AI and most of the time it’s not really helping.

Some people say everything was more interesting when you still needed to learn and know things, figure out stuff and work for it. And today everything is just provided as a service, people know shit about things they just use on a surface level and have no control over, or understanding of…

I had a quick look and seems there have been some projects packaging the Signal server for Docker… But the projects Google returns as results on the first page all seem to be abandoned. Seems this is a bit niche. Unfortunaltely I don’t have any good advice here. I run a Matrix server, so I don’t have experience with this.

Signal is not a federated protocol, though. I guess you can run that server code. But it won’t connect you to your friends and people on the regular Signal network. (Plus you’d also need to build a custom version of the client/app.) I’m a bit unsure whether OP is aware of that.

I certainly hope we go further than that and also cut down on Chinese solar inverters, dubious smarthome/cloud appliances… And I wish we don’t buy too many US weapon systems now that we invest in war/defense, so Trump can’t just blackmail us with the ammunitions supply.

Oh well, LLMs are notoriously bad at chess. Other tasks as well. Maths, especially counting… But I’d say this is because they’re not very intelligent. And not trained to be a chess computer. So a clever elementary-school kid will outperform them at keeping the chess moves to legal ones. Or at counting letters in words. But that doesn’t directly lead to the conclusion they’re not world models. That’d need some qualifying, quantification and a mathematical proof. This is just opinion.

And I mean what is a world model? LLMs can mostly perceive the world through words, they can’t see as I do. (Hence the name… This sort of AI had originally been designed to model language.) Not smell or hear properly. And they can’t interact with the world and (directly) learn from that feedback. And I bet not the entire world is available as internet text for their datasets. So they won’t have a world model similar to mine… But mine isn’t complete either. I can only see and hear a small bandwidth. There are things I can’t even sense. I haven’t been to a lot of places… I’m bad at chess as well… And there’s generally a lot of things I don’t know or can’t do. So I’m not sure what a world model is even supposed to be and how complete we want it to be. Do I have one?

Right. “Would somebody please think of the children” is almost always not about children, but a means to justify some new oppression or surveillance tech. If they cared, they’d invest spend money to staff police force or implement some of the useful suggestions. Or invest in children’s wellbeing, teach them media literacy or fund some programs so they can get help or spend their time in a better way. Same for adults and the various reasons they resort to AI for companionship.

I’ve also used Debian on my computer for decades and rarely did any application crash. It’s just not a thing. Well… I had FreeCAD crash regularly. But it did that for years and on any distribution. Other than that I did stuff on Debian all day every day and it was just fine.

I think they have push notifications in XMPP these days. At least Prosody has modules like mod_unified_push and mod_cloud_notify and that seems to be supported for example by Conversations.im

To be honest, I didn’t have lots of battery drain, back when I used XMPP. And other old-school protocols like e-mail and sip voip don’t seem to be very bad either with whatever mechanisms they use. Or my phone isn’t reporting battery drain correctly… And with Matrix I also had to set up push notifications manually, or it’d just receive messages with a random delay per default.
