Especially shit that has gone though development hell and multiple restructures
I was going to say – It’s almost offensive they even offered it. I know it has a bit of a fanbase but it’s been through the ringer trying to get out.
I really liked the first one when I was younger. More than it deserved probably. It hit a lot of the right stuff for me.
I don’t have any good expectations for this new one. It should be something I’m looking forward too but I’m not. Much less pre ordering it.
I hope it’s good. If it is I’ll play it.
Keep your hopes down. The project has been restarted 4 times and lastly handed over to a small studio in a turmoil with no experience in the genre.
I’ve preordered games before and not regretted it.
This is definitely not going to be such a case. The amount of development hell this game has gone through, it’ll be a miracle if it even ends up good enough that I decide to buy it at all. I’m certainly not buying it sight unseen.
They don’t even seem to be offering any incentive to pre-order? Which honestly might be a good thing. It reduces the accusations of gating content…and they’ve got enough to deal with on that front already, considering two clans and a heap more content are gated behind day-one DLC. $45 day-one DLC, in fact (in Australia at least). That’s as much as a full game in many cases. (Including all of the other games in the VtM franchise. In fact, of the 20 other games in the World of Darkness franchise linked in a collection on Steam from this game’s Steam page, only 2 are more than half that.)
I just feel like no matter what, it’s been so long that it will still not meet expectations. Like what happened with DNF.
This game looks awesome. People who’ve gotten their hands on it are saying great things.
But in absolutely no way should you pre-order it.

Take games journalism with a grain of salt. Even the largely honest ones generally only get the first “X minutes” to demo, which designers pack impressive moments into for the press, but then the rest of the game is half baked or a slog.
Take fallout 4 as an example. They throw you into a laser battle, in full power armour, with a death claw in the first hour. Do you keep the armor? No. Do you keep going toe to toe with deathclaws? No. You get made into a minuteman bitch seconds after and then have to set up 638 settlements. Guess which part the press got to see before release?
No preorders is always right.

I’m not going to pre-order anything, but I’ll stay cautiously optimistic.

Buy it on GOG, I believe the Steam version of Bloodlines doesn’t even launch. GOG version comes bundled with the “basic” version of the Unofficial Patch which - as far as I know - is literally required to be able to finish the game. GOG also has a one-click installer for the Plus Patch with more restored content as of like a month or two ago, if you’re into that. I personally recommend playing non-Malkavian Basic Patch for a first experience and doing Malkavian with the Plus Patch for a second playthrough.
The game is absolutely worth it, it’s a cult classic for a reason. The combat sucks so be prepared for that and the second half of the game is extremely rushed as the developers were forced to shove it out the door but even having said that it’s a great experience for what it is.

The steam version didn’t launch a while ago because it was still 32bit without any compatibility for 64bit. Last time I played it worked fine though. YMMV
Edit: there was also an unofficial workaround to get it working.

Yeah. It looked like it was getting close to release in like 2020? Might even have been 2019. They released a trailer back then. Then it got postponed a bit. Then the entire original development team, Hardsuit Labs, was fired from the project, and after a delay, a British company called The Chinese Room (known for linear adventure games like Dear Esther and Little Orpheus) took over development and basically redid it from the ground up. I assume some assets were reused, but the entire story is completely changed, including swapping from a thin-blooded vampire to an elder vampire re-awakened after a century of torpor.
