That’s a hard no on military conscription. As for public service tutoring kids or working in national parks, it sounds a lot like forced unpaid labour to me. You want people to work, you pay them.

    Hi from Finland.

We have mandatory conspriction for men here, but everybody have option to serve civilian service instead where you basically work free for job goverment orders. Idea being if you dont fight in war you will have basic knowledge for some non fighting role during war time.

You get small pay during this and goverment pays your rent during the civilian service.

Personally i think its great system for a country that has unreliable and potentially hostile neighbor with large standing army and long border.

      That sounds fantastic

All we have here (or did) was 40 hours of ‘volunteerig’

Finland sounds like a much better place

The source of data for the part of the headline telling readers what their nation has already decided

At least seven in 10 people responding to a recent Angus Reid poll supported the idea of one year of mandatory public service for Canadians under 30 — things like tutoring kids or working in national parks. Mandatory military service, however, was more divisive, with 43 per cent in support and 44 per cent opposed.

With the ongoing and relatively unaddressed affordability and housing crises in Canada, these had better be pretty well-compensated. Maybe just focus on expanding public services to face the myriad challenges facing our society devastated by neoliberalism

Yes! As citizens we not only have rights, we should also have responsibilities. If managed correctly this could be a positive thing.

Yes, force young people to sacrifice their time so that boomers can have a comfortable life while not contributing anything to society. Just make it mandatory for everyone to participate in public services and see how people will like the idea.

What?! All young people? All Boomers? You use an incredibly wide paintbrush. Make all of the children eat all of their vegetables and see how they like that idea? I guess this is individual rights versus working for the collective (i.e. helping out the community).

How about we talk about making it mandatory for young adults no matter their background and wealth to work in some form of retail or food industry?

The very question of asking them to be a public service to be prepared for war only means that the adults in the room have failed absolutely miserably that we have to go back to that point again in human history. What an absolute disgrace.
