I have no love for Newsom and he’s clearly going to be the Hillary Clinton of 2028 or die trying. But it’s true that the only thing that works against fascists, short of physical resistance, is relentless, biting derision and mockery. So his social media manager is doing society a service here.

I’m worried, we’re all worried, and that worry makes Trump stronger. Because worry + inaction = normalization, and normalization + time = radicalization . Mockery does something subtle to break this cycle: it’s not just cathartic, it normalizes a contrary reality, namely that Trump and his lackey are clowns, and in doing so implicitly reassures us that our reality and expectations remain valid. That in turn slows down normalization. The other response - hopelessness (which I’ve reacted with plenty of, I admit) - speeds it up. Trump, an instinctive savant at exploiting people, knows it lessens his power and that’s why it infuriates him.

So if we’re not pouring into the streets, then mockery is one of the only ways to resist normalization and break that cycle.

I don’t know much about him other than a few things. But he’s a Democrat getting press and California governors have become President before, so. Who knows.

I’ll just say this: if it’s 2028 and the “left” has done sweet fuckall to organize or promote a different candidate, I guess I’m voting for him then. Because the “left” went completely apeshit over Harris’ supposed “support of genocide” and “transphobia”, neither of which mattered a good goddamn when what we have now is utter insane chaos - actual support of genocide and actual transphobia in office - and the people who went apeshit are as to blame as the trump voters.

TL;DR: Don’t care. Not voting republiQan and as it stands right now there’s only one other choice. Not going to play around with people who will fuck this up AGAIN.

Yes, to be clear: I agree. I’m not going to vote against my interests in 2028 (including a non-vote, which was always against real workers’ interests despite the spurious “left protest” commenter spam in 2024), assuming we get there. I do really hope that the democratic leaders get out of the way or at least start supporting candidates who live in 2025, and not 2012.

Then can we stop with the caveats at the top of every comment? They’re all flawed to get that far.

I was just thinking yesterday how the left parties in my country never bite back. They don’t get down to that level, but half of voters are of less than average intelligence. Many of those can’t be won with facts and reason. They need drama and propaganda. They need to be riled up. They need to be told who they hate and jokes and songs that insult the opponent. It’s not like there aren’t enough opponents: Fascists, billionaires, the corrupt, imperialists, etc.

So the joke is getting less funny the longer he keeps this up. If he’s not careful he could get stuck and this will be his thing and he won’t be able to stop. And then there will be two of them posting like this.

Haha I was wondering if there was a reason Trump started writing slightly more like a human!

At least this has some kind of effect man. I don’t think he was ever doing this just to be funny for funny sake

I think it would be more of a dig in he spoke like a respectable adult; to model what that looks like for Trump.

This is stupid. I don’t want prominent political figures speaking like biligirent teenagers. Can’t one of the parties act like they have their shit together, or does this all need to be an episode of Jerry Springer?

Democrats have spent 10 years “taking the high road” while Donald Trump literally re-enacts the rise of the Nazi party in Germany, 1932 and it’s gotten them nowhere.

At this point I don’t give a shit if Gavin Newsom is actually like this. Mocking Trump is what respectable adults do.

Democrats handed the presidency to Biden when he was the weakest candidate in the primaries. Then they spent four years quietly addressing issues while Biden aged completely out of being a viable president. He foolishly ran again, so Israel could keep blowing up kids. They then propped up a replacement candidate with no primary when they saw that he had a snowball’s chance in hell of winning. Harris was ok, but “more of the same” didn’t resonate with people and she had little charisma. Whatever Obama has, she does not.

I don’t think we are in this position because our candidates aren’t doing “Trump speak”. I think it’s because they don’t have a message that resonates with normal people.

Pete Buttigieg, love him or hate him, has a good communication style. He goes on Fox news and wins debates and hopefully pushes people towards more reasonable approaches. It’s not so much the high road, as it is having a message that makes sense.

I think the outcomes will be the same no matter how Newsom speaks until Democrats fight for the people they are supposed to represent instead of their donors. This just is the worst of both worlds.

Ofc you do, because you’re an intelligent individual. However trumps base is a bunch of low brow alcoholics who just vote for the “funny guy”.
