Time to start a social media controversy where we argue about whether it’s mac. or m.a.c… It’ll be lemmy’s written version of the gif controversy.
I’ll make a masto poll when I get home.done.
Apytele@sh.itjust.worksto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•There are almost certainly people learning a second language being accused of AI slop.1·14 hours agoDepends on what you call a mistake. I was interacting on ich iel a while back (I don’t speak German but the meme had clear meaning as a fellow nurse) and they said chat gpt had almost perfect grammar but that it translated “median basillic vein” as the “median basil vein” (like the herb).
Apytele@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Lemmings who write but never share your writings: How is it going?2·1 day agoI mostly write porn.
One story is years old and it’s an illithid that runs away from the commune with a captive they couldn’t quite make into a thrall. I’ve hit a wall with that one because they’ve run away to the drow now and I suck at political intrigue. I think I need to go back and delete even a few of the chapters on ao3. I’ve gone back and forth over the years as to whether or not to keep the sex scene but I’ve got it mostly written the story just isn’t there yet.
One is a femdom alternate reality where society has just always been matriarchal. Instead of having women who act more masculine and beat men and make them crawl in the floor and eat shit while wearing panties or whatever it’s just a world where all the same stereotypes exist they’re just exaggerated in a way that flatters women more than men. Like “boys will be boys” is an idea used to keep men out of politics and academia instead of an excuse for bad behavior. The big thing examined is how lower class men are considered disposable for the purposes of dangerous jobs.
I’m currently working on a fanfiction for the consentacle card game about a first contact delegation where the aliens are like “ok so before we establish an embassy we need to figure out how to have safe sex because we know it’s gonna happen” and the humans are like wait so the rest of the universe is also horny all the time? And they’re like OBVIOUSLY.
I also half finished a Blake’s 7 fic before my fascination with the show died back and now I’m worried I wouldn’t be able to finish it with the same faithfulness to the source material that made it so appealing to readers to begin with.
Just like last time I’m gonna chime in about how my ex with the foot fetish was actually super chill sexually speaking and while he had a loooooot of mental health problems his solid grasp on consent and just general sexual patience really made a big difference for me and how I negotiate my sexual needs with that of all the partners I’ve had since. He really really needed to get a job and move out of his parents house though. Still hasn’t. Jesus that man was a dumpster fire in every other conceivable way.
Eh. Single use plastics are REALLY useful in certain areas of healthcare where sterility is important. Especially for vascular access devices. Nothing is going to beat the ability of plastic to:
-
stay sterile on a shelf for months to years at a time, so that it can safely be used to bypass 90% of a person’s immune system to give lifesaving medication and reliably produce quality samples for testing
-
do it while being flexible enough to not damage the vasculature permanently or in a way that causes enough damage / inflammation to render the access point unusable
-
Yet be resistant enough to breakdown that it’s unlikely to break off in a large enough chunk that could migrate and damage the brain heart or lungs.
And I suspect someone who works OR has a way longer and more interesting list than I do.
Now there are other areas in healthcare that plastics could be significantly reduced. The big one that occurs to me is hygiene supplies. We use a lot of single use wet wipes and bed pads with plastic backings. If we were willing to give direct care workers more time to spend with each patient they could make better use of washcloths, washable bed pads, etc.
But there are a select few use cases where I expect plastic to outperform all alternatives for the foreseeable future.

Apytele@sh.itjust.worksto Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•I know they're the minority of users, but are they ever *not* on? (crosspost)31·3 days agofr though this is legitimately a significant factor in my suicidal ideation (it’s chronic, I’m fine, etc). People need to learn to stfu and stop shitting on everyone else’s mental health with their own insufferable need to publicly prove that they’re personally flexible enough to gag on their own justice boner.
Apytele@sh.itjust.worksto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Want to buy a Tarot Deck for my partner, What should I get?3·3 days agoMy rec was gonna be the biddy tarot since it’s a modern / inclusive version of the rws which is some of the most common imagery used in themed decks so if she decides to get a Pokémon themed deck or whatever later the imagery will translate well (I have a cat meme deck and an emoji deck in addition to my traditional rws deck). Comparing the imagery across themed interpretations of the RWS is FASCINATING and has taken up a significant part of my last two years. The biddy is about 2x what you’re asking though so let me see what else I can find…
Apytele@sh.itjust.worksto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's good to know before transferring from Emergency to Operation Room as a nurse?1·3 days agoNot up close and personal but it was enough.
Apytele@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do any asthmatics take something like oral prednisolone as opposed to inhaled corticosteroids? Is it a recognized standard of treatment if the latter fails or even just a valid alternative per se?8·3 days agoInhaled meds work almost instantly, 99% of oral meds take up to an hour to even hit the bloodstream, often more to hit peak blood concentration. If inhaled meds aren’t working you don’t have time for an oral med to work; at that point you’re tubing the person.
A corticosteroid also has way too many side effects to be taken long term, like another user said. Long term you’re talking one of the more targeted immune modifying drugs like singulair.
Now what you would still use a corticosteroid for is an acute exacerbation that’s not an emergency. So like, pneumonia where you’ve got the person on a shitton of antibiotics and you need their inflammation to sit down and shut up for a second while they work. So their throat hasn’t actually started closing up yet but it might try if you don’t use the steroid.
Hope this helps.
(I do see some people saying best practice is shifting away from this; I work psychiatry so our patients aren’t always getting top of the line care. I take whatever bones the hospitalist deigns to throw us, LOL)
Apytele@sh.itjust.worksto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What's good to know before transferring from Emergency to Operation Room as a nurse?4·3 days agoThey actually care whether or not shit is sterile. Oh and the thing somebody said about surgeons. Ewww.
Haven’t figured out the best plan. After a quick therapy sesh with the hobos at the bus stop I’m thinking I’m just gonna study the subject matter and see if I can test out of the relevant courses at a testing center (instead of a course with multiple smaller tests).

Once walked in on a mother literally spoon-feeding a meal to a grownass approx. 30y/o man with 0 physical disabilities or cognitive deficits, just an uncomplicated depression with at most some mild personality disordered features.
It explained SO much about that patient presentation.
I can’t take AI proctored exams because I have a lazy eye and it tracks whether or not you’re looking at the screen. It’s the main thing keeping me from getting a bachelor’s because most associates to bachelor’s RN programs are entirely online.

Apytele@sh.itjust.worksto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•I laughed when a guy came in from Doordash and picked up one can of Formula. I thought crazy someone would do that. But he claimed that he once delivered a candy bar. Anyone know if that possible?7·5 days agoAnd more responsible not to drive regardless of your concern for your own well-being. I’ve heard stories from coworkers who have worked ED of people who didn’t want to call an ambulance for their heart attack or stroke symptoms and lost control of the vehicle and plowed their car through the ED waiting area. Also one of the reasons we don’t have drunk tanks anymore is cops misdiagnosing things like hypoglycemia. So if you’ve got the low glucose sweats & jitters it might be worth doordashing a snack.
My advice to people with recurrent chest pain that’s confirmed to be anxiety is to call a friend and chat while you do some light housework or go for a walk or whatever. If it gets better with light activity it’s anxiety. If it turns out you finally are actually having a heart attack, your friend can call the ambulance.
Here’s my rec from AliExpress. Modern shape and color but a lot of classic imagery still. This one sort of as well. You could then pair either with a more traditional RWS deck for her to compare the imagery too. I wouldn’t fuss too much on getting a guide book. The internet has a wide range of interpretations to draw from. Wikipedia even has a pretty good set of pages on all things metaphysical and I find that it approaches them from a pretty grounded place as spiritual traditions without placing a lot of weight on them as truly divinatory or anything.
