If it’s any consolation, you’re much more likely to get killed by the police officer than the logging truck

Honest question. What is the origin/reason of this fashion to prevent the use of capitals?

some people point to e.e. cummings but tbf, even without him we’d start typing like that eventually. it’s normal to want to fuck with the rules and make it a style

I’m pretty sure it started with artists using lowercase in their titles and album names. I have 0 evidence for this

I think it’s primarily younger people who learned to type by having a computer or tablet in the house without the need for formal typing lessons. And then at the other end of the spectrum we have people old enough that they didn’t really use computers in their youth and are learning the technology the same way the kids are. I think typing with capitalisation is most common in people who attended computer classes as part of their grade school education. I think the farther we go past the advent of the home computer, the more people will be typing lowercase in casual chats. I don’t have any hard data to back this up, just a collection of anecdotal observations.

this didn’t happen because of computers, this style just got popularised faster through them - like pretty much everything else. breaking the rules to create a specific style is just a thing prople do

logs that fall off of trucks don’t behave that way in real life so that’s still a ticket

Even if you’re tailgating and the log bumps off? I’m not good at physics btw.

Yes. You are both going the same speed. Unless there is some obstacle on the road that will immediately stop the log your brakes will do a better job of slowing you down than a log will just sliding on the road. The bigger danger is honestly driving towards the truck in case this happens

Speed limit: 65 Trucks: 55 I pass a truck at 76… That’s a ticket, 11mph over puts you in the “real fines” zone. Never mind that the truck was going 21mph over his speed limit.

Oh, and then the officer says… Since its a first offense, you can waive the fine if you take our online class, and it won’t be reported to your insurance.

The online class has a fee of exactly the fine +$10. Payable to some private company of course.

I wanted to turn around, drive back to Nebraska and [fedpost].

Does it still benefit you if it isn’t reported to your insurance company and you get I guess to pay less

Yes, but it’s extortion. It benefits me in the same way that if I pay the mob $100, it’s cheaper than if they broke the windows in my shop.

But you did break the law in this case. Waiving it if you do some online class is not exactly extortion imo

Maybe you would say I deserved to be extorted by the government for passing a semi truck instead of hanging around behind it. But essentially, making the threat that your insurance rates could go up by a lot OR you can the fine PLUS an extra fee to a private company, is dastardly. If their purpose was public safety rather than extracting money, they would not be doing this. They also lie saying the fine will be waived to get you not to argue and exercise your rights.

And then, of course, for a while after something like this you start to REALLY notice every time a cop does 11mph over the speed limit. Or 20mph. Or 30mph. Or doesn’t use their blinker, and so on (and no, I obviously dont mean with their lights on for an emergency).

You deserved to be fined for breaking the law. They gave you an option to not show it on your insurance. You could’ve just paid the fine you deserved to get.
